The Ultimate Base for Your Tunis Trip: Hotel Royal Victoria Stay Report Part 2

In my previous article, I shared the history and exterior charm of Hotel Royal Victoria. This time, I’ll report in more detail about the actual stay experience. From our late-night arrival to breakfast, and sightseeing taking advantage of the location, I’ll share how wonderful our stay at Hotel Royal Victoria was.

Late-Night Arrival: A Warm Welcome

We arrived at Hotel Royal Victoria around 2 AM. We had taken a late-night flight, which resulted in this late arrival. However, thanks to the hotel’s excellent location, the journey from the airport was very smooth.

When we arrived at the hotel, I was honestly a bit worried about causing trouble at such a late hour. However, this concern proved unfounded. The reception staff greeted us with cheerful smiles despite the late hour. This warm welcome was truly appreciated by us, weary from our travels.

While waiting for the check-in process to complete, I looked around the lobby interior. The decor, based on red velvet and light blue tiles, created a very luxurious atmosphere. Queen Victoria’s portrait on the wall was somewhat cheaply made, which felt slightly surreal, but her lovable expression seemed to ease our tension as we settled in.

Room: A Compact Yet Charming Double Room

After check-in, we were led to a Double Room. Actually, I had initially wanted to book a Suite, but unfortunately, they were already fully booked, so I had reserved a Double Room. If you’re hoping for a luxurious stay, it might be wise to book a Suite as early as possible.

Compared to the overwhelming decor of the Suite, the Double room’s decoration was simpler and more compact. However, it was just the right size for two people. The bed was comfortable, and I was relieved to know it would soothe our travel fatigue (and of course, there were no bedbugs).

The bathroom was particularly impressive. Beautifully decorated with blue tiles, it allowed us to experience the Tunisian ambiance right upon arrival. It had such an exotic atmosphere that I couldn’t resist taking photos. Since it was already late at night, we decided to leave a more detailed exploration of the room for the next day and went to bed early.

Morning Surprise: Spectacular View from the Balcony

Opening the curtains after a night’s sleep

I still vividly remember the excitement I felt the next morning when I opened the curtains and stepped onto the balcony. Spread out before me was a wonderful view of Victory Square and Porte de France.

Victory Square already overflowing with people in the morning

The moment I saw this scene, I felt the realization that “Ah, I’ve really come to Tunisia.” This place, connecting Tunis’s old town and new town, is a landmark and meeting point for locals. Looking at the square and gate standing in the morning mist, my heart swelled with excitement for the adventure about to begin.

Breakfast: Encountering Tunisian Flavors

Still excited from the balcony experience, I headed to the breakfast area to prepare for sightseeing. Breakfast was buffet style, mainly Western food, but with plenty of unique Tunisian elements incorporated.

Particularly memorable was the traditional Tunisian sweet “Makroud.” This is wheat flour paste stuffed with dates and then fried, with an exquisite balance of sweetness and texture. We also enjoyed local yogurt, fruits, and of course, fragrant Tunisian coffee among other local tastes.

The balance between Western and local cuisine was well-maintained, so we could enjoy breakfast day after day without getting bored.

Great Location: Ideal as a Base for Sightseeing

After enjoying breakfast, we immediately set out to explore the Medina (old town). This is when I truly appreciated the excellent location of Hotel Royal Victoria.

The Medina of Tunis is incredibly crowded

While the Medina is certainly charming, it was unexpectedly mentally exhausting due to the crowds and approaches from locals. At such times, the existence of Hotel Royal Victoria was truly appreciated. Being able to quickly return to the hotel for a breather away from the hustle and bustle was incredibly valuable.

Moreover, time spent at the hotel was never wasted. Enjoying tea and sweets bought in the Medina while gazing at the square from the balcony was a lovely way to experience Tunis. I feel that being able to enjoy a fulfilling stay while balancing sightseeing and rest was thanks to this hotel’s location.

Hotel Staff Response: Heartwarming Service

Throughout our stay, I constantly felt the warmhearted response of the hotel staff. From our late-night arrival until checkout, they always greeted us with smiles. Perhaps because we were the only Asian guests, they quickly remembered our faces and asked “How are you?” whenever we returned to the hotel.

When we consulted about sightseeing, they told us about recommended spots unique to locals and gave advice about safety, responding very attentively. Particularly helpful was when we mentioned we were thinking of taking a train trip to Sidi Bou Said, and they kindly informed us that the trains were currently broken down so it would be better to go by taxi.

Conclusion

Our stay at Hotel Royal Victoria holds a special place in our memories of the Tunis trip. The luxury of spending time in a historic building, heartfelt service, and above all, the perfect location. All of these made our Tunis trip even more special. For travelers who want to thoroughly experience the charm of Tunis, this hotel would be an ideal place to stay.
