During my stay in Jeddah, I visited “Historic Nights Rooftop Cafe” after a friend told me “there’s a place you absolutely must go.” This experience became the highlight of my trip to Jeddah. Today, I’d like to share my visit to this unique cafe.
The Journey to the Cafe

Making my way through the beautiful old Al-Balad district to find the cafe
My adventure began the moment I set foot in the Al-Balad district. Old buildings lined the narrow alleyways, with weathered walls that seemed to be inscribed with the weight of history. When I asked for directions to the cafe, locals helpfully guided me. However, their explanations were along the lines of “turn at that corner, pass the building with the brown door…” – somewhat challenging for a first-time visitor.

After wandering for about 15 minutes, I finally found the building I was looking for. At first glance, it appeared to be just another old building, but a small sign indicated the presence of the cafe.

I was a bit confused at the entrance, but once inside, I found steep stairs. I hesitated briefly, wondering “Do I go up these?” but mustering my adventurous spirit, I began to climb. As I ascended the narrow, somewhat dim staircase, suddenly there was a bright light. And I caught my breath at the view that spread before me.
Encountering a Breathtaking View

The moment I stepped onto the rooftop, a 360-degree panorama of Al-Balad spread out before me. Countless traditional buildings, distinctive Roshan decorations, and the Red Sea visible in the distance. I couldn’t help but exclaim “Wow!”
I visited in summer, so the cafe was open from 5 PM. They operate from evening to avoid the daytime heat, starting when a pleasant breeze begins to blow. It’s the perfect timing to enjoy the sunset and night views.
A Blissful Moment in a Relaxing Space
The cafe was filled with Arabian ambiance. I sat on a sofa adorned with colorful cushions and browsed the menu. Without hesitation, I ordered Arabic coffee. And, as recommended by my friend, dates to accompany it.

The aroma when the coffee arrived was incredible! The rich scent of cardamom tickled my nose. I was surprised by its unique flavor at the first sip. Some people might find it a bit challenging if they’re not used to it, but I was completely captivated. The coffee, enjoyed while nibbling on dates, was absolutely exquisite. The harmony of sweetness and bitterness, combined with the view of Al-Balad, created an indescribably luxurious experience.
Enjoying the Ever-Changing Scenery

During my stay, I enjoyed watching the sun gradually set. Al-Balad showed a different expression than during the day. The sunset light reflecting on the buildings made it seem as if the entire town was glowing with gold. And as night fell, the illuminated buildings exuded yet another charm. Then came the time for Maghrib (sunset prayer) with the evening twilight. The call to prayer could be heard from a nearby mosque, announcing the prayer time.

Other tourists and local young people were also enjoying this scenery in their own ways. Some were setting up cameras, others were engaged in conversation, and some were silently gazing at the view. Everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying this special space.
Unexpected Encounters
A conversation naturally began with some local young people sitting near me. They were fluent in English and told me about the history of Al-Balad and its recent changes. I was able to hear interesting stories about how while tourism development progresses, there are efforts to preserve traditions, and how young people have begun to reevaluate the charm of this district.
The Emotional Journey Back

Al-Balad is worth exploring both during the day and at night.
By the time I left the cafe, the sun had completely set. Walking through the alleyways that showed a different expression than when I came, I savored the experience of the day. Dim lights illuminated the narrow paths, and Arabic music could be heard from somewhere. It felt like I had traveled back in time.
Conclusion: A Place You Must Visit
“Historic Nights Rooftop Cafe” was a place that provided an experience beyond just a cafe. The spectacular view of Al-Balad, the relaxing space, the aromatic coffee and dates, and unexpected encounters. These combined to create unforgettable memories. If you have the chance to visit Jeddah, please make sure to visit this cafe. However, note that in summer it’s only open from evening, so be mindful of your timing. Also, since the location can be a bit difficult to find, I recommend allowing plenty of time for your visit.
Walking through the alleys of Al-Balad, climbing the stairs, and encountering the wonderful view. This series of experiences will surely enrich your trip to Jeddah. For me, the time spent at this cafe became an irreplaceable memory that concentrated the charm of Jeddah.
Side Note:
By the way, Al-Balad is quite large, so you’ll need frequent breaks when exploring. Especially, it’s best to stay at a nearby hotel for water and toilet breaks. In my next article, I’d like to introduce “Al Murooj Kareem Hotel,” a conveniently located hotel in the center of Al-Balad.

In the next article, I’ll share about Al Murooj Kareem Hotel, recommended as a base for your Jeddah journey.
