Jeddah, the gateway to Saudi Arabia. When visiting the historically charming Al Balad district, choosing the right accommodation is a crucial factor that can determine the success of your trip. In this article, I’ll introduce my stay at “Al Murooj Kareem Hotel,” which proved to be the perfect base for exploring Al Balad. This excellent value hotel became my secret headquarters for thoroughly enjoying the Al Balad experience.
Perfect Location! Feel the History in the Heart of Al Balad

Al Murooj Kareem Hotel facing the main road of Al Balad
The greatest appeal of Al Murooj Kareem Hotel is its location. Situated in the center of Al Balad, it’s right next to the historic buildings registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Step outside the hotel, and you’re immediately immersed in an exotic townscape. You can feel Al Balad’s charm firsthand with traditional wooden balconies (Roshan), narrow alleys, and vibrant markets (souks).

Being close to Jeddah’s old town is a welcome point for tourists
During my stay, I was able to follow an ideal pattern: start sightseeing immediately after leaving the hotel in the morning, return to the hotel to rest during the hot midday hours, and go out again in the evening. This location, where I could quickly return to the hotel after wandering through Al Balad’s maze-like streets, was truly appreciated.
Outstanding Value for Money
In and around Al Balad, luxury hotels costing over $400 per night are not uncommon. Among these, Al Murooj Kareem Hotel is surprisingly reasonable. When I stayed, it cost about 200 Saudi Riyals (approximately $50) per night.
However, this low price does not mean low quality. Clean and comfortable rooms, friendly staff, and comprehensive facilities – honestly, this quality at this price was unexpected. Considering its location in the heart of Al Balad, this hotel’s cost-performance ratio is outstanding.
Comfortable Rooms and Hotel Facilities

Spacious and comfortable guest rooms
Stepping into the room, I felt reassured by its cleanliness and comfort. The bed was spacious with good sleeping comfort, perfect for healing a body tired from hours of sightseeing. The air conditioning, although a slightly older model, worked well and helped me forget the heat outside.
The bathroom was also clean, with sufficient water pressure in the shower. Amenities such as toilet paper and soap were adequately provided.

The lobby lounge interior is quite elegant
Particularly noteworthy is the café inside the hotel. With its classic yet stylish interior, it has become a popular spot frequented by locals as well. You can enjoy Arabic coffee, of course, along with various types of tea and fresh juices. Since you can also have breakfast here, you can start your day enjoying local flavors.
Also Ideal as a Rest Spot During Al Balad Sightseeing
When walking around Al Balad, you may suddenly feel the need to take a break. Especially in summer, the scorching sun beats down, making frequent breaks necessary. In such times, the presence of Al Murooj Kareem Hotel was truly appreciated.

Finding toilets can be challenging while sightseeing. Be particularly careful as there aren’t many toilets in the Old Town.
Having a place where I could casually drop by between sightseeing was more important than I had imagined. Using the toilet, replenishing cold water, or lying down for a bit in an air-conditioned room – this hotel became my “secret base.”
Culinary Spots in the Vicinity
The charm of Al Murooj Kareem Hotel lies not only in the hotel itself but also in its surroundings. In particular, the abundance of dining establishments is worth special mention.

First, Jeddah’s oldest bakery is about a 3-minute walk away. At this bakery with over 100 years of history, you can taste traditional Arabian bread. There’s a constant stream of travelers who can’t help but visit every morning, lured by the aroma of freshly baked hot bread.

Ras Mandi
Also, there’s an established restaurant nearby that serves authentic Mandi (goat head meat). The traditional Mandi, which enhances the flavor of the ingredients with straightforward salt and oil seasoning, was absolutely exquisite.
Additionally, there’s an established restaurant directly across from the hotel that serves Bukhari (traditional chicken rice). This is a men-only establishment, but the Bukhari enjoyed among local Saudis is exceptional.

Having these delicious eateries nearby enriched my stay at Al Murooj Kareem Hotel. Setting out from the hotel to enjoy delicious meals, and then returning to the hotel again – this cycle seemed to be the essence of staying in Al Balad.
