In the previous article, we briefly discussed the allure of seaplanes. When going to a resort, it’s highly recommended to enjoy the ocean view from the sky with a seaplane. However, using an unfamiliar mode of transportation in an unfamiliar place can lead to unexpected troubles such as booking mistakes or confusion about meeting places.
In this special feature, we will guide those using a seaplane for the first time through the process and points to note when using it. Please read on to prevent troubles during your stay!
First, in Part 1 “Reservation,” we’ll explain the preparation stages leading up to the day of use.

Seaplane Reservations: Basics and Important Points
Firstly, as a general rule, seaplanes are usually booked through the resort where you will be staying. Unlike regular domestic flight tickets, you don’t need to arrange tickets individually (although it is technically possible, it will be exorbitantly expensive). In other words, the chance to take a seaplane other than to a resort island is almost non-existent.
Normally, when you make a reservation for a resort hotel on a booking site, you will be presented with the option for transportation, usually a choice between a seaplane and a speedboat. At this point, express your preference for the seaplane.
One important note is that some resort hotels may be labeled as “Free Transfer” on booking sites, but in reality, it’s often just an error, and you will be asked to pay for the transfer separately from the accommodation fee. Moreover, the cost of using a seaplane is around $400 round trip, depending on the distance! It’s a considerable amount that you wouldn’t want to be unaware of.
To prevent troubles, contact the resort hotel via message before making a reservation, confirm the cost and payment method for the transfer option, and make the accommodation reservation with all costs clearly stated.
Reservation Process
Now, let’s explain the specific reservation process. Some parts may overlap with what we’ve already explained, but it’s always good to be thorough, so please take a look at the overall process!
1. Send a Message to the Hotel Before Making a Reservation
Once you’ve decided on your hotel, contact the hotel before completing the reservation on the booking site. In the message, inquire about the available transportation methods, the cost, and the estimated travel time. This will allow you to estimate the total travel expenses, including accommodation fees, and plan your travel schedule in detail.
2. After Making the Hotel Reservation, Adjust the Details
After booking the hotel, contact them again. This is usually done through messages on booking sites or email exchanges. Inform them of your arrival and departure dates from the Maldives and discuss arranging a suitable flight. If you plan to visit another destination within the Maldives before or after, let them know.
Generally, the seaplane departs and arrives at Velana International Airport in Malé. If departure or arrival is from/to a different location, separate arrangements for a chartered flight will be necessary, and the cost can be significantly higher, so be cautious.
3. Reserve the Seaplane and Receive Confirmation
Once the dates are confirmed, reserve the required number of seats on the seaplane. However, be aware that the reservation confirmation is usually sent casually via email. To avoid potential issues later on, request a proper confirmation email from the other party.
4. Confirm the Meeting Time and Meeting Place on Pickup Day
Finally, confirm the meeting time and meeting place on the day of pickup. It may be included in the confirmation, but if not, separate confirmation is required. In some cases, the response may be that it won’t be known until the day before, so you may need to wait for further updates in such cases.
The meeting place is usually at the resort’s dedicated counter near the front entrance of Velana International Airport. Each counter is assigned a number, so go to the counter with the designated number at the specified time.
5. Obtain a Local SIM Card
For added caution, I personally called the hotel the day before pickup to confirm the meeting place. In addition to last-minute confirmation, it’s advisable, if possible, to purchase a local SIM card and ensure that your phone is capable of making calls. This is helpful in case of unforeseen troubles or unavoidable schedule changes.
