Thai train

Chiang Mai, the ancient capital of northern Thailand, has gained worldwide recognition in recent years, attracting visitors from across the globe. While there are several ways to reach Chiang Mai from Bangkok, the overnight train offers a uniquely memorable experience. Here’s my firsthand account of traveling from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by sleeper train.

Thai Sleeper Trains

The State Railway of Thailand operates overnight trains connecting Bangkok with major cities like Chiang Mai. While Thailand doesn’t have high-speed rail systems like Japan’s Shinkansen, the 14-hour journey becomes quite manageable and even enjoyable on a sleeper train.

The trains offer various accommodation options, including carriages with bunk beds and private compartments. The bunk bed carriages come in both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned versions, with air-conditioned carriages commanding higher fares.

Class Options

Thai Railways offers three main classes on their sleeper trains:

First Class: Private air-conditioned compartments with en-suite shower and toilet
Second Class: Air-conditioned carriages with bunk beds, separated by curtains for privacy
Third Class: Regular seats without air conditioning but equipped with fans – the most economical option
For this journey, I chose a second-class air-conditioned carriage. Note that amenities can vary by train service, so it’s advisable to verify the specific features of your chosen train when booking.

The Route

I took the line running from Bangkok (Krung Thep) Station to Chiang Mai Station. This route passes through significant northern Thai cities including Ayutthaya and Phitsanulok. The train departs at 9 PM, allowing passengers to sleep through the journey and arrive in Chiang Mai just after 7 AM the next morning.

At Krung Thep Station, I checked my carriage and seat numbers on the ticket. The train was already at the platform with many passengers boarding.

Entering our second-class carriage, we found bunk beds arranged in two columns on either side of the aisle. The space was surprisingly roomy and comfortable. Each bed came equipped with a mattress and blanket, promising a decent night’s sleep.

On Board Experience

After stowing our luggage, we explored the train. The dining car and restrooms were located at the end of the carriage. The dining car offered meals, snacks, and a trolley service. Having brought our own local snacks, we only purchased drinks.

Back at our seats, we enjoyed our snacks. Since the nighttime view is limited due to darkness and window reflections, it’s recommended to bring entertainment like books or games.

Night time on train

The lights dim around 11 PM. You can either sleep in preparation for the next day or enjoy stargazing through the window – the choice is yours. Many passengers naturally drift off to sleep as the train rocks gently along the tracks.

The Next Morning

I woke around 6 AM to find the sky beginning to lighten. The views gradually revealed themselves – lush countryside and mountain villages passing by our window. The train makes several stops, including Lamphun Station where passengers board and alight, indicating our approach to Chiang Mai.

About 30 minutes later, we arrived at Chiang Mai Station right on schedule, just after 7 AM.
