Is Elephant Rock Worth Visiting? It’s Not Just a Big Rock – A Chillout Experience in AlUla

Elephant Rock after sunset is truly the highlight of any AlUla journey

“Elephant Rock? Isn’t it just a rock?”

At first, I thought so too. However, after actually visiting, I realized this preconception was completely wrong. This massive rock formation located in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, is filled with charms beyond its appearance. In this article, I’d like to share the allure of Elephant Rock that I experienced, in as much detail as possible.

What is Elephant Rock?

As its name suggests, Elephant Rock is a massive rock formation shaped like an elephant. It boasts an impressive scale of about 52 meters in height and 25 meters in width. The sight of a rock the size of a five-story building towering in the middle of a vast desert is truly magnificent.

The charm of this rock is not just its size. It took millions of years of exposure to wind and sand to form its current shape. You can witness the wonderful power of nature’s sculptural abilities firsthand.

How to Access and Important Notes

Elephant Rock is located about 20-30 minutes by car from AlUla’s old town. In recent years, infrastructure for tourists has been developed, with basic facilities such as parking lots and restrooms now available. However, be aware that public transportation is virtually non-existent, and taxis are rare. Also, don’t forget that you’re in a desert region, so appropriate preparation is necessary.

This time I arranged a car hire (charter) and headed to AlUla from Hegra

Notably, the summer operating hours are worth mentioning. To avoid the extreme daytime heat, the site only opens in the evening during summer. However, this actually becomes an attractive element for visitors.

Elephant Rock at Twilight

Magical Elephant Rock at twilight

I visited in the early evening of summer. This was partly to avoid the scorching daytime heat, but also because, as mentioned earlier, summer operating hours are set to begin in the evening. As it turned out, this time of day was the most enchanting.

As the sun begins to set, the appearance of Elephant Rock gradually changes. The reddish-brown rock surface shifts colors moment by moment, from orange to red to purple, as if the rock itself is breathing. This is the ideal time for photography.

While it’s possible to view the exterior outside of operating hours, I think that would be a tremendous waste. Because the true charm lies inside the area.

Elephant Rock at Night: Unexpected Ways to Enjoy

As the sun set, the area around Elephant Rock gradually began to buzz with activity. Initially, I found this surprising, but soon understood why.

Sofas and tables are arranged in the desert in front of Elephant Rock. I was surprised by the concept of “relaxing in the desert,” but was impressed to see locals gradually gathering and naturally taking seats there.

Families, groups of friends, couples – various people relax in their own ways. The sight of what appeared to be a living room suddenly emerging in the middle of the desert was very impressive.

Desert Oasis: Café Hopping

There are numerous café stands around the rock

As I was walking, I began to feel thirsty and wanted something to drink. That’s when I noticed several café stands set up around Elephant Rock.

I stopped by “Elephant Rock Cafe by Key.” Attracted by the sophisticated atmosphere of the name, I ordered a strawberry smoothie.

Combined with the ambiance, it was far more delicious than I had expected. The cold, sweet-and-sour taste made me forget the desert heat. With this smoothie in hand, I sat down on a nearby sofa.

A sweet smoothie really hits the spot after sweating in the scorching heat during sightseeing!

Looking around, I could see people enjoying coffee, having light meals, and spending time in various ways. Some cafés seemed to offer light food menus as well.

Evening Breeze and Starry Sky: The Ultimate Relaxation Experience

Sitting on the sofa, savoring my smoothie and relaxing, I was enveloped by a strange sensation. In front of me stood the giant Elephant Rock, around me people chatted cheerfully, and above me stars began to gradually appear. I couldn’t help but think, “This must be the Saudi Arabian way of relaxation.”

The feeling of being away from the hustle and bustle of the city, with your heart settling down just by being there. The desert night breeze caressing your cheeks, and laughter heard from afar. You can feel time flowing slowly.

The Rock Illuminated

As the night deepened, Elephant Rock began to be illuminated, showing a completely different expression from daytime.

The texture of the rock surface illuminated by lights, the shadows of strange shapes… it even gives the impression of being alive. I felt the urge to approach and observe it more closely.

Since I was already here, I decided to pass through the gap between the elephant’s body and trunk

Walking up to the rock and looking up from below, I was breathless at its overwhelming size. I felt a deep emotion, thinking, “Can the beauty of nature’s sculpting be this magnificent?”

Summary: Elephant Rock Is Not Just a Rock

Initially, I thought Elephant Rock was “just a rock.” However, after actually visiting, that perception was completely overturned.

1. A Natural Work of Art: Formed over millions of years, it is truly art created by nature.

2. A Healing Space: A place that could be called an oasis in the desert, making you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

3. Cultural Experience: A valuable place where you can feel contemporary Saudi Arabia firsthand.

4. Photography Spot: The scenery, especially at twilight, is spectacular and allows you to take memorable photos.

5. Stargazing: You can enjoy a sky full of stars that you would never see in urban areas.

6. Interaction with Locals: Surprisingly bustling, it’s a place where you can experience the daily life of Saudi Arabian people.

Elephant Rock is not just a place to visit. It’s a place to experience with all five senses. If you have the opportunity to visit AlUla, I strongly recommend going there from evening to night.

Surely, a special “dialogue with the rock” awaits you. Don’t underestimate Elephant Rock. It is the intersection of Saudi Arabia’s nature and culture.
