European Station Ticket Gate Systems

While ticket gates are commonplace at stations in Japan, most European stations don’t conduct entry checks with ticket gates. Basically, you can freely access platforms and smoothly board trains. Instead, they employ a system where conductors check tickets and passes onboard.
The method of entering station premises also differs significantly from Japan. In most cases, arrival and departure information boards are immediately visible upon entering the station building, where you can check your train’s platform number. You can then directly access platforms using escalators, elevators, or stairs.
However, at some stations or for express trains, ticket checks may be conducted before entering platforms. Particularly at major stations or platforms for long-distance trains, staff may check tickets at platform entrances. For Eurail Pass holders, you can handle this by presenting your digital pass and registered itinerary screen.
Proper Ticket Verification and Fare Evasion Penalties
While the system allows free boarding and alighting, this presupposes that you have proper tickets or passes. Conductor ticket inspections are very strict, and not possessing appropriate tickets or passes can result in hefty fines. During inspections, we recommend having your app ready so you can clearly show your smartphone screen.
Additionally, if you mistakenly board trains not covered by your pass or board reservation-required trains without reservations, you’ll need to pay additional fees. Even if it’s an accidental mistake, you must follow conductor instructions and pay the presented additional charges. To avoid such troubles, always confirm the following points before boarding:
- The train you’re boarding is covered by your pass
- For trains requiring reservations, you’ve completed advance bookings
- Your chosen route falls within valid pass usage days
- Your digital pass and reservation details display correctly
Effective Use of Flexible Passes

Flexi Pass can be used on non-consecutive days
Among Eurail passes, flexible passes that allow you to freely choose usage days are particularly popular. For example, if you purchase a 4-day valid pass, you don’t necessarily need to use it on 4 consecutive days. You can use it distributed across preferred days like day 1, day 3, day 5, and day 8.
This way, you can create more efficient itineraries by not using the pass on days you’re enjoying city stays and only using it on days requiring long-distance travel. You can board trains multiple times within the same usage day. However, as an important note, you must use it all within one month from the first usage day.
Planning Considering Time Zones
Europe has time differences between east and west, with time generally advancing as you go east. Train timetables are displayed in each country’s local time, so special attention is needed when crossing borders. However, when registering itineraries in the Rail Planner app, time differences are automatically considered, so following the app’s displayed times should pose no problems.
Using Overnight Trains
When crossing midnight, only the boarding start date counts as a usage day. For example, if you board a night train departing at 11 PM, only the boarding date counts as a usage day, and the arrival date doesn’t count. Using this system, you can travel longer distances with one day’s usage right.
Onboard Facilities and Comfortable Travel
Seat Area Facilities
Recent trains have power outlets installed at most seats. Wi-Fi services are also being developed on major trains. However, connections can be unstable in mountainous areas or near borders, so it’s safer to avoid important online work.
Using Dining Cars

Most long-distance trains have dining cars where you can purchase hot meals and drinks. Prices are generally slightly higher than regular restaurants. However, services may be limited on early morning/late night trains or mountain and regional routes, so it’s reassuring to bring light snacks for long journeys.
Luggage Handling
European trains provide luggage spaces above seats and between seats. Large suitcases can be placed in luggage spaces at the ends of cars. However, these spaces are first-come-first-served, and sufficient space may not be available during busy times.
Self-management of your luggage is the principle. To prevent onboard theft, keep valuables close at hand and regularly check large luggage visually. For itineraries with many transfers, keeping luggage to the necessary minimum can make travel smoother.

Choosing Between 1st and 2nd Class
2nd class is comfortable enough for travel. The main differences between the two are seat quality and spatial allowance, with 2nd class ensuring comfort close to standard cars on Japanese bullet trains. You can also move freely throughout the train, and dining car access is possible from both classes.
However, if you’re planning special experiences like Switzerland’s Glacier Express or other tourist trains, or if you have many long-distance journeys, choosing 1st class is worth considering. If you want to enjoy scenery in a more premium space, consider purchasing a 1st class pass.

Glacier Express
Reality of Border Crossings
Between countries that have signed the Schengen Agreement, no special entry procedures are required. When trains cross borders, there are no special inspections or procedures, allowing smooth movement like domestic travel. However, when traveling to countries outside the Schengen area, normal entry procedures are required, so attention is needed.
