When it comes to Chinese airlines, many people may feel uneasy about safety and reliability. This image might become even stronger when it comes to budget airlines, but what’s the actual reality?
Today, we’ll introduce Juneyao Airlines, which recently became a hot topic for launching international flights to Kobe Airport.
Having had the opportunity to book and board a Juneyao Airlines flight, I’ll report on the reality of this somewhat mysterious airline based on my actual flight experience.
What is Juneyao Airlines?

Juneyao Air is a Chinese airline established in 2006, based at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Despite operating as a full-service carrier rather than an LCC (Low-Cost Carrier), it’s characterized by relatively reasonable pricing.
As of 2025, it primarily operates domestic Chinese routes and short-haul international flights, including services to international airports worldwide (so many travelers may have encountered it in flight search results). The airline is known for actively introducing latest-generation aircraft and is also recognized as a Star Alliance connecting partner, ensuring international credibility.
Actual Flight Experience
This time I used an early morning flight from Shanghai to Xiamen. I chose it primarily because the timing was convenient, and surprisingly, because of its affordability. Even compared to other airlines on the same route, the pricing was quite reasonable.

Boarding pass issuance was smooth using the self-service counter
On the day of travel, there were no troubles like being unable to issue tickets despite having reservations. Airport procedures were completed smoothly using automated check-in machines. Recent Chinese airports have advanced automation, allowing smooth completion of boarding procedures.
Cabin Impressions

Upon entering the cabin, my first impression was “more normal than expected.” The seats were kept clean and maintained at a level comparable to typical full-service airlines.

Despite not being a long-haul route, cushions were properly provided
While there was no entertainment system due to the flight being under 2 hours, each seat was equipped with cushions, showing consideration for creating a comfortable air travel experience.
Unexpected In-Flight Meal Service

Shortly after takeoff, breakfast service was provided. The menu included “meat and seaweed toast” with a somewhat unique flavor, and Chinese-style steamed buns. While not exactly luxurious, providing in-flight meals on domestic flights under 2 hours is a service rarely seen with many other airlines.

Bread with uniquely Chinese exotic flavors
Particularly on early morning flights, having such light meal service was very appreciated. The taste was distinctive, but it provided a good opportunity to experience Chinese food culture.
Flight Safety and Punctuality
During the flight, there was no concerning turbulence or anxious moments. The flight operated on schedule with on-time arrival. Regarding maintenance condition and operational safety, at least for this particular flight, I felt no problems whatsoever.

The view of Xiamen cityscape from above was beautiful
Therefore, my overall evaluation exceeded expectations in terms of satisfaction. Summarizing the pros and cons, it would look something like this:
Advantages
– Affordable pricing
– Cabin cleanliness beyond expectations
– In-flight meals provided even on short routes
– Efficient check-in system
– Reliability in on-time operations
Points to Consider
– Uniquely flavored in-flight meals (depending on preferences)
– No entertainment system (short-haul flights)
– English communication may be limited in some cases
Summary: More Than Just Affordability – Unexpected Quality
My preconception of Juneyao Airlines as a “Chinese budget airline” was significantly overturned through the actual flight experience. While fares are indeed set at affordable levels, this doesn’t sacrifice service quality.
Particularly impressive was the commitment as a full-service carrier to provide in-flight meals even on short-haul flights. The cabin cleanliness and attitude toward punctual operations were also at levels comparable to typical major airlines.
When using Chinese domestic routes or short-haul Asian routes, Juneyao Airlines can certainly be a viable option. While initially attracted by the low prices, this flight experience that exceeded expectations became an opportunity to reconsider stereotypes about Chinese airlines.
Of course, one flight experience alone cannot determine everything, but at least the preconception that “cheap means problematic” proved not necessarily correct. While international flights are still limited, I’d like to continue watching this airline as one that provides solid basic services at reasonable prices.
