What is Ouarzazate?

Ouarzazate is a city in southeastern Morocco, situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. What makes Ouarzazate special is its authenticity – unlike the touristic hubs of Marrakech, this remote town offers visitors a genuine glimpse into everyday Moroccan life.

Interestingly, its name in Arabic (ورزازات) features a unique characteristic where all letters are written independently – a rare occurrence in Arabic script that language enthusiasts find fascinating.

Ouarzazate is deeply rooted in Berber culture. The Berbers, Morocco’s indigenous people, maintain their distinct language and traditions here. Hollywood of Morocco

Ouarzazate has earned its nickname as the “Hollywood of Morocco” by serving as a filming location for numerous international productions, including “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Gladiator.” Visitors can tour the film studios and explore movie sets.

Kasbah Taourirt

This 17th-century fortress offers panoramic views of Ouarzazate and the Atlas Mountains. Its well-preserved architecture provides insight into traditional Moroccan defensive structures.

Todgha Gorge

Located about 30 minutes from Ouarzazate, this spectacular canyon features lush oases and dramatic rock formations.

Getting There

Ouarzazate is accessible by CTM bus, taking approximately 4 hours from Marrakech and 6 hours from Fez.

Recommended Stay

While the main attractions can be covered in 1-2 days, a 3-day stay is recommended to fully experience the city’s charm, explore the desert, and visit Todgha Gorge. The best times to visit are spring and autumn, as summers can be extremely hot.
