While Morocco is often associated with the historic medinas of Marrakech and Fez, or the picturesque blue streets of Chefchaouen, there’s much more to discover. Today, we’ll explore Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the desert, which offers a unique perspective on Moroccan culture away from the typical tourist routes.

What is Ouarzazate?

Ouarzazate is a city in southeastern Morocco, situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. What makes Ouarzazate special is its authenticity – unlike the touristic hubs of Marrakech, this remote town offers visitors a genuine glimpse into everyday Moroccan life.

Interestingly, its name in Arabic (ورزازات) features a unique characteristic where all letters are written independently – a rare occurrence in Arabic script that language enthusiasts find fascinating.

Cultural Heritage

Ouarzazate is deeply rooted in Berber culture. The Berbers, Morocco’s indigenous people, maintain their distinct language and traditions here. The city’s streets are lined with shops selling traditional Berber crafts and textiles, and visitors can experience authentic Berber hospitality by visiting local communities.
