The Uganda National Mosque is also known as “Kampala Hill Mosque” or “Gaddafi National Mosque.” It was built with support from Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi and completed in 2007. It’s one of the largest mosques in Africa, capable of accommodating about 10,000 people. Located in the center of Kampala, its magnificent dome and tall tower are recognizable from a distance.

Brief Note: Religious Context in Uganda

Uganda is a diverse religious society where Christianity, Islam, and minority traditional beliefs coexist. Christianity is the majority religion, with Catholicism and Protestantism being widely practiced. Meanwhile, Islam is primarily practiced in certain regions of the country, and Kampala has many mosques built. The Uganda National Mosque stands as a particularly symbolic one among them.

The View from Outside

The Uganda National Mosque stands out wherever you are in Kampala city

First, I was overwhelmed by the exterior of this mosque, visible from anywhere in Kampala city. Located on a hill towering over the city center, its gleaming white dome and minaret (tower) are beautifully set against the blue sky. Looking up from the roads that radiate out from the base of the hill, your heart is naturally captivated by its dignified appearance.

As you approach the mosque, its grandeur becomes more vivid. Combined with the surrounding greenery, the beauty of the mosque stands out even more. The entrance is decorated with Arabic calligraphy motifs, showing that it has a splendid appearance comparable to mosques in Middle Eastern countries.

Inside the Mosque

The majestic interior of the mosque. While some strict mosques completely prohibit non-Muslims from entering, the Uganda National Mosque is relatively tolerant in this regard

Stepping into the mosque, I felt my heart being cleansed by its majesty and tranquility. The spacious prayer area is adorned with decorations meticulous in every detail. Light, diffused by the large dome on the ceiling, beautifully illuminates the interior, softly spreading across the pale blue carpet on the floor. The interior decorations incorporate traditional Islamic art motifs and are extremely intricate.

The large domed ceiling and chandeliers. Truly East Africa’s largest mosque.

Taking a quiet deep breath inside the giant prayer hall gives you a sense of stillness and peace as if you’re in another world. Depending on the time of your visit, you might see people performing prayers, and their solemn atmosphere would likely make your heart feel tightened with respect.

Hundreds of Spiral Steps Through the Minaret

Next, I challenged the minaret ascent. I’ll be climbing these stairs.

After touring the prayer hall, I headed to the towering minaret next door. One of the highlights of the mosque is the 67-meter-high minaret, and I learned for the first time on-site that it’s actually possible to enter the tower and climb to the top. However, inside the tower is a long spiral staircase, which can be quite a challenge for visitors. By climbing these hundreds of steps, you can access the top, which offers a panoramic view of the mosque and Kampala.

Looking back after reaching the top. If you fell, there would be no hope…

The spiral staircase is narrow and steep, but there are windows in the walls at intervals, allowing you to enjoy the outside scenery. With each step up, the view opens more, building anticipation. Taking breaks on the stairs, I was captivated by the cityscape and lush green landscape visible through the windows.

There are small windows along the way where you can enjoy the outside view.

The View from the Top of the Tower

Finally reaching the top with trembling legs, I was breathless at the spectacular view before me. From the rooftop, you can literally see a 360-degree view of Kampala’s urban area, and the sight is truly impressive. The Nakasero Market I had explored earlier that day, the city’s buildings, and roads all appear small. The breeze is pleasant, and I could feel the quiet flow of time, away from the hustle and bustle of Kampala’s center with its swirling red dust.

From the top, you can view the entire Kampala city.

The mosque itself, viewed from the tower, is also beautiful, with its symmetrical design standing out. The contrast between the lush green hilly terrain and the blue sky creates a beauty that burns into your eyes. The view from here is definitely a must-see point when visiting Kampala.

Summary

The Uganda National Mosque is an iconic presence in Kampala, captivating visitors with its beautiful architecture and magnificent views. The solemn atmosphere inside the mosque and the panoramic view from the top of the tower offer valuable experiences that cannot be found elsewhere. When visiting Kampala, be sure to stop by this mosque and see its charm with your own eyes.
