In my previous post, I described the journey to Sazi village via a local boat across Lake Victoria. Now, I’ll share my experience traveling from Sazi to Sina Village on Uganda’s motorcycle taxi service, the “Boda Boda.” Thanks to my friendly driver, it turned into quite an interesting adventure.

What is a Boda Boda?

Boda Boda is a motorcycle taxi service widely used throughout East Africa, including Uganda. Fares are negotiable, with short trips starting from as little as 100 shillings (approximately $0.03).

In the Kampala area, there’s a convenient app called Safe Boda – similar to Southeast Asia’s Grab or Gojek. Simply enter your destination in the app, and a nearby Boda Boda will quickly arrive. https://www.safeboda.com/

From Sazi to Sina Village by Boda Boda

Upon arriving at Sazi port, several Boda Boda drivers were waiting for customers. I approached one and asked if he could take me to Sina Village.

A young man with a cheerful smile readily agreed. While he didn’t speak my language, we could communicate in basic English. Uganda, being a former British colony, generally has good English comprehension even in rural areas. However, the distinctive Ugandan accent and typically fast speech patterns might take some getting used to.

The journey to Mpigi village, where Sina Village is located, is about 20km along a single unpaved road. Our motorcycle moved swiftly along the red dirt road, passing caravans along the way. The young driver was incredibly friendly and entertaining. Since I wasn’t in a hurry, we made several interesting stops during our journey.

Curious Encounters Along the Way

Brown mound

First, he pointed to a brown mound and asked, “Can you guess what this is?” When I couldn’t answer, he exclaimed, “It’s cow manure!” Well, that explained the smell – it was being collected for fertilizer.

Termites in manure
Termites swarming inside – quite a startling sight

When he broke apart the mound, termites came swarming out. “Isn’t this interesting?” he asked with a bright smile. I couldn’t help but laugh and ask if he was really going to handle his motorcycle handlebars with those same hands.

Unknown fruit

My driver seemed to have a natural talent for tour guiding, enthusiastically showing me interesting finds along our route.

Local banana
Showing me a wild banana variety – not sweet, but used in traditional Ugandan ‘matoke’ dishes

He continued stopping to show me bananas and mysterious fruits along the way. It was a delightful surprise to get not just a motorcycle taxi driver but also an impromptu tour guide.

Unmanned produce stand
A side note: we found an unmanned produce stand – a good sign of the area’s safety

Finally, we arrived at Sina Village. I thanked my driver profusely for turning what could have been a simple journey into an exciting adventure before heading into the village.

Final Thoughts

While Boda Bodas might not offer the most comfortable ride, they provide an incredible way to experience Africa – feeling the fresh air, cutting through the wind, and most importantly, connecting with local people. It’s definitely a recommended mode of transport for the adventurous traveler.

What experiences await at Sina Village? Stay tuned for the next installment!
