Todaye, I’d like to introduce Taiwan’s representative gourmet food, “滷肉飯” (also called “魯肉飯 (Lu Rou Fan)”), in the form of a ranking of the most delicious restaurants in Taipei City, based on my own judgment.

To be fair, we received hundreds of comments from local Taiwanese people on the Facebook Taiwanese community forum in advance, and the members of our reporting team, or rather the Luwei team, went around and ranked the 30 restaurants that received the most recommendations from them. Of course, everyone has his or her own taste preferences. Of course, everyone has his or her own taste preferences, so we hope you will take this as just a reference!

We hope you find this article useful, not only for those planning a trip to Taiwan, but also for those who plan to stay in Taipei for an extended period of time, whether on business or as an expatriate!

Please note that the term Lu Rou Fan – “滷肉飯/滷肉飯/魯肉飯” in the text is used differently in each restaurant, basically following the name of the restaurant and the menu!

Taipei’s Best Luwei Rice (滷肉飯) Ranking based on my own prejudice!

No. 10 – San Yuan Hao Lu Rou Fan (三元號魯肉飯)

Sanyuan No. Lu Rou Fan (back) is characterized by its Soboro style.

The first dish that came in at No. 10 was Sanyuan No. Lu Rou Fan. It may be hard to tell since I failed to take a good picture, but the dish at the back features a small bowl of lu rou (see below for the Lan Liao Heen on the left).

Although ranked 10th in this ranking, this does not mean that it is not recommended, and it is a delicious dish widely loved by both locals and tourists. However, the members of the Luwei team who conducted the interviews this time were all in favor of the “thick rou roe that has been simmered for a long time and the meat and fat are blended together,” which is why Sanyuan No. Lu Lu Han’s light and healthy Soboro (minced meat) style rou roe was ranked 10th. If you don’t like fat, or if you want to travel as healthy as possible, this is the perfect place for you!

No. 9 – Cheng Wei Cheng Yimian Luwei (程味珍意麵滷味)

Not only does Cheng Mi-Chen offer Lu Wei rice, but also a wide variety of other Luweiy dishes. It is dangerous, but in a good way!

The ninth place winner is Chengwei Cheng, which offers a wide variety of 滷味 (rouwei). The Luwei is a Taiwanese-style street food made by simmering ingredients in a soy sauce-based broth containing herbs, and is a part of daily life in the local area, much like a side dish shop. The famous Cheng Mi-Chen Luwei restaurant makes a delicious Luweiy rice dish, and there is no reason why it should not be delicious!

If you go to Cheng Mi-Jen, you should try their Luwei as well

The taste of the Luwei is tender and tender, with the meat still in its original shape. It is hard to say which is better than the other 9 restaurants, but we have to give our own judgment and rank it as No. 9!

No. 8 – Huang Ji Lu Rou Fan (黃記魯肉飯)

Huang Ji Lu Rou Fan is crowded with many take-out customers. Make sure to go with plenty of time to spare.

The eighth place goes to Huang Ji Lu Rou Fan, a pioneer in the takeout Lu Mei business. Especially around dinner time, you can see many locals waiting for their orders with a number tag in hand.

Takeout of the Lu Bei! I wish I could take it back to my country with me.

The taste of the dish is just what you would expect from a restaurant with a long queue. It’s so good. I personally think that the roe that has almost melted into a paste is perfect for me. However, I felt the amount of roe to rice was a bit small, so it was ranked 8th in this year’s ranking. We are sure that there are individual differences, but please forgive us for giving our own evaluation based on the timing of our visit!

No. 7 – Hu Shu Chang Lu Rou Fan (鬍鬚張魯肉飯)

Hu Shou Zhang Luo Lo Fan is well-known for its bearded logo. They even have an original song.

Hu Shu Chang Lue Lo Fan is well-known for its bearded logo. They have many restaurants in Taiwan, and many of you have probably seen them at least once. In Taiwan, where there are many gourmets, a company that can open so many restaurants can be expected to have the ability to do so.

A bowl of with a carrot accent.

And here is one of the bowls of which they are proud. As you can see, the carrot Luwei is a distinctive feature of this dish. The roe is also tender and shiny, which is completely to my liking. I apologize for being so arbitrary in my judgment, but I have to rank this dish 7th simply because I personally did not like the carrots that much. I am sorry for the unfair ranking!

No. 6 – Jin Feng Lu Rou Fan (金峰魯肉飯)

The menu of Jin Feng Lu Rou Fang. You can get Lu Rou fan rice at any restaurant for about 30 NTD and up.

Jin Feng Lu Rou Fan is well known. Located in an area with many tourist attractions, such as the Zhongzheng Memorial Hall, it is probably a familiar restaurant to tourists, especially Japanese. Many of the Lu Mei restaurants introduced here are restaurants where only local people gather, but this one is one of the best in its class and attracts international customers.

Here is a bowl of Jin Fong Lu Mei. The main features of this dish are the rather large cut roast meat that retains its original shape and the shiitake mushrooms that are blended into the meat. In particular, the taste of the shiitake mushroom broth is a key point that characterizes the unique aromatic flavor of the Jin Fong Lu Mei.

To be honest, there is not much difference between No. 1 and No. 10. However, if I had to rank them, I would rank them 6th!

No. 5 – Wanlin Lu Rou Fan (丸林魯肉飯)

Unlike other Lu Rou Fan restaurants (?), this one has an upscale atmosphere. The luxurious interior design

Next on the list at No. 5 is Wanlin Lu Rou Fan. It is a space characterized by a luxurious interior that does not look like a roast rice restaurant. Although there were few other customers as we visited just before closing time, this is also a well-known restaurant in the area.

A cup of soup that melts in your mouth.

This is their signature dish. The extract dripping from the moderately tender roe meat permeates the bottom of the rice. The accompanying soup of bone broth is also irresistible. Although it does not have any special characteristics, the well-balanced Marurin Lunghi Rice is awarded the fifth place.

No. 4 – Ximen Jinfeng Lu Rou Fan (西門金鋒魯肉飯)

The chic-looking Ximending branch

Ximen Jinfeng Lu Rou Fan, a branch of Jinfeng Lu Rou Fan introduced earlier, comes in at No. 4. Unlike the main branch, it is characterized by its chic, black-based interior, and is almost exclusively staffed by local customers, in contrast to the many tourists who frequent the main branch, making it a recommended place to enjoy Lu Rou Fan in a relaxed atmosphere.

And here is Ximen Jin Feng’s pride and joy, Lu Mei. The linearly cut lo mein is truly the mark of Jin Feng. It is served with a side dish that makes it an elegant dish. The meat is delicately made so that it melts in your mouth while keeping its firm shape, and the Lu Beef Rice even gives you a glimpse of the essence of the Kim Fong brand. Perhaps the atmosphere of the restaurant makes it taste even better than the main restaurant, which is why it is ranked fourth, a little higher than the main restaurant.

No. 3 – Dadaocheng Lu Rou Fan (大稻埕肉飯)

The bronze medal was awarded to Dadaocheng Lu Rou Fan, a well-known take-out restaurant. You can eat in the restaurant, but as expected of such a popular restaurant, the restaurant was already full when we visited.

I apologize for the poor quality of the picture, but it was a golden bowl of rice to relieve the fatigue of the trip.

The characteristi is the two-colored Luwei. The red part of the meat paste and the fatty part of the meat back that still retains its shape are separated to make the dish more vivid and full of flavor. Perhaps it was the fact that I was riding a rental bicycle under the scorching sun that day that made me feel the minerality of the Lu Beef Rice so well. We award an honorable third place to this golden bowl of take-out quality!

No. 2 – Jin Da Lu Rou Fan (今大滷肉飯)

My personal favorite, Jinda Lu Rou Fan I always stop by on my way from Taoyuan Airport to the city!

The runner-up is Jinda Lu Rou Fan. It was very hard to decide between first and second place. I would have to say they were tied for first place! No, if anything, it would not be an exaggeration to say that Jin Da Lu Rou Fan is the winner in my opinion! It is such a highly recommended restaurant for me personally, but I was forced to give it second place because it is technically located in New Taipei City, not Taipei City…! Well, it’s almost Taipei, since it’s just across the river from Taipei City, so there’s no problem in saying it’s almost in Taipei.

The pot is said to have never been washed since the opening of the restaurant, which is the secret of the taste

The special feature of Imadai is its Luwei, which is so tender and juicy that it is almost like a Luweinut. It is said that the pots used for Jin Da’s pot have never been washed since the restaurant opened, and the secret flavor that has been preserved over the years and decades by adding Luwei to the pots is mysterious. The richness of the Luwei and the medicinal aroma of the Luwei are unparalleled, and even artistic beauty can be felt.

As you can see, the bowls of Imada’s Luweiy rice are made with a straightforward pursuit of deliciousness, without any pretentiousness. The melted red meat becomes extract and coats the rice, while the fat on top retains its dice-like shape, as if it is waiting for the moment to be brought to your mouth with its overflowing thick soup.

It is unquestionably No. 2. Although it is located a little out of the way from the center of Taiwan, it is definitely worth a visit for all fans of Luweiy meat!

No. 1 – Sushi Juleboo Lu Rou Fan (司機倶楽部)

The first place in this year’s ranking goes to Sushiki Club!

The winner of this year’s ranking is the 司機倶楽部, which has a store in Songshan Dist. Located in an area slightly outside of central Taipei, it is a perfect example of a hidden gem. The restaurant was well supported by the local Taiwanese people and was extremely popular with our Luwei team.

I will say nothing more. I would like you to experience the preciousness of the taste by all means.

The well-balanced Lu Mei is a sight to behold. I have already exhausted my vocabulary to praise Lu Mei, so I won’t say too much, but as you can see from the picture, every parameter is perfect: fatty, rich, juicy, medicinal flavor, and so on. It is a must-visit restaurant for anyone traveling to Taiwan.

Extra – Lan Xiao Xuan Late Night Japanese Beef Meat Rice (蘭笑軒)

Lan Xiaoshuan Late Night Japanese Beef Meat and Rice Restaurant only appears late at night on weekends.

Well, additionally I would like to introduce a different kind of Lu Mei restaurant. This is “Lan Luo Heen Late Night Japanese Beef Meal,” which only appears late at night on weekends. This new type of Lu Mei, which is slightly different in flavor from ordinary Lu Mei, has been attracting a lot of attention in recent years, especially among local gourmets.

Late at night on weekends, they pull up in rickety carts and spread out their stores on the street.

Unfortunately, this weekend pop-up store has been closed as of April 2023, but to our surprise, they now have several fixed stores and seem to be selling their products in actual stores. Although we can no longer experience the culture of those days of waiting in line in front of an unnamed cell phone store from around 11 p.m. at midnight for an hour for the arrival of the carts, the taste of Ranjoken is still alive and well. Please visit the above 10 ranked restaurants as well!

How was it?

In this article, we have introduced some of the best restaurants in Taipei that serve Taiwan’s representative gourmet “滷肉飯 (魯肉飯),” based on our own judgment and prejudice. In addition to the restaurants introduced here, there are many other famous restaurants in Taipei that remain nameless. Planning a trip to Taiwan
