Mr. Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe is a candy store that was founded in the UK in 2004. Despite its relatively short history, the antique-style exterior of the shop, reminiscent of Victorian-era Britain, quickly spread throughout England, evoking memories of the good old days. The brand name, with its unique old English-like words, is irresistible to Anglophiles.

The shop’s design is often said to be somewhat reminiscent of the world of Harry Potter, and in recent years, they’ve even launched Harry Potter collaboration products.

If you’re planning a trip to Hong Kong, I strongly recommend visiting the Mr. Simms Central store on Hong Kong Island! You might wonder why go to Mr. Simms in Hong Kong, but the fact is, currently Mr. Simms only has stores in the UK and Hong Kong. It hasn’t expanded to Japan, or even to neighboring countries like Korea or China.

As you may know, Hong Kong was once a British territory, and even after its handover, it still retains many traces of the British colonial era. Additionally, many British companies and brands still choose Hong Kong as their first overseas base, and Mr. Simms established its first overseas flagship store in Central, Hong Kong.

Why not try the sweets from Mr. Simms, available in only two countries worldwide – the UK and Hong Kong – during your Hong Kong trip?

I visited Mr. Simms in Central!

This time, I actually bought some pick-and-mix sweets at Mr. Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe in Central, so I’ll share my report.

Mr. Simms Central is located near Hollywood Road in Central, Hong Kong Island, which is known for its many photogenic walls. It’s a good idea to drop by while exploring the surrounding area.

This is what the exterior looks like. While many other Mr. Simms stores in Hong Kong have newer and cleaner exteriors, the Central store has a retro and antique-style design that feels nostalgic, reminiscent of the standard design from the past.

The interior is filled with candy everywhere!

When you enter, you’ll see candy displayed on all the walls like this. Not just candy, but a wide variety of sweet treats including chocolates are lined up, making your heart skip a beat!

At the back of the store, you’ll find the pick-and-mix candies in jars. The colorful gummies, candies, and soda pops catch your eye.

They also have chocolates shaped like old and new gadgets,

Unfamiliar bomb-shaped chocolates(?)

And they also have a great selection of surprise sweets. These could be perfect for a birthday surprise during a girls’ trip to Hong Kong!

Let’s try the pick-and-mix sweets!

Now, let’s try out the main attraction – the pick-and-mix candies. The system is basically the same as CANDY A GOGO or SWEET FACTORY in Japan, where the price is added up by gram. At Hong Kong’s Mr. Simms, it’s 35 Hong Kong dollars (about 630 yen) per 100 grams. Considering the cost of living, it seems reasonable. Be careful though, as there’s an additional charge for using a plastic bottle instead of a plastic bag.

There are many candies (gummies) I’ve never seen before. I wanted to try a little bit of everything.

f:id:hallur:20230709230742j:image

Unlike CANDY A GOGO in Japan, you don’t fill the bag yourself. Instead, you point and order, and the staff fills the bag for you. You can order in detail like “2 of these blue ones, 3 of these donut-shaped ones”. Sometimes they might accidentally put in different gummies, but let’s take it easy and consider it part of the charm.

Personally, I liked the red & green striped gummies in this photo. The black penguin-shaped gummies in the front are the infamous licorice flavor. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re really into exotic flavors (laughs).

Certainly, here’s the continuation of the translated HTML blog post:

I finished with banana gummies. As a side note, I mistook them for cashew nut flavor gummies due to their shape, and didn’t realize they were banana-flavored until I ate them.

In the end, I bought about 2000 yen worth. The bottle itself is also recommended as a souvenir. Filling it with some kind of candy or sweets makes for a cute and exciting gift.
