In my previous article, I introduced the booking process and important tips for using the Haramain High Speed Railway (HHR Train). This time, I’ll share my actual riding experience from Medina to Jeddah Airport.

Taking a Taxi from the Hotel to Madina Station

My journey began with a taxi ride from my hotel to Madina Station. Since HHR stations are located away from city centers, vehicle transportation is necessary. I used the “Careem” ride-hailing app to arrange my ride. However, unexpected road closures due to construction caused us to arrive about 5 minutes later than the original Google Maps estimate. Fortunately, the driver adapted well to the situation, helping us avoid a significant delay. This experience reinforced the importance of allowing extra time for unforeseen circumstances.

Arriving at the massive HHR Madina Station
Madina Station: Inspired by the Green Dome

Upon arriving at Madina Station, I was immediately struck by its modern architecture. Particularly impressive was the design inspired by Medina’s iconic green dome. The beautiful station, which fuses Islamic and modern architectural elements, heightened my excitement for the journey ahead.

After entering the station, I scanned my pre-issued e-ticket to pass through the gates. The well-designed flow allowed me to proceed without stress. I then underwent a baggage inspection before heading to the platform. The thorough security measures provided a reassuring sense of safety.

Madina Station has a three-story structure. We need to reach the 3rd floor departure level.
The Platform Where Trains to Mecca Await

After completing the baggage inspection, we take the escalator down to the platform.
Upon reaching the platform, I saw a train with an appearance similar to Japan’s Shinkansen waiting for passengers. Since all seats are reserved, I made my way toward the train number and seat indicated on my ticket.

The train exterior adorned with the HHR logo
The first five cars are business class, while the rear cars are economy class. I had booked a seat in the 6th car, which is the frontmost economy class car. Since there’s quite a distance from the platform entrance to each car, I recommend booking a seat in a car closer to the front when possible. This minimizes walking distance and makes boarding and disembarking more efficient.

The interior is spacious and comfortable
Stepping into the train, I was immediately impressed by its comfort. The interior could be described as a Japanese Shinkansen with Arabian design elements, and there was ample legroom. Each seat is equipped with power outlets and USB ports, creating an environment conducive to comfortable long-distance travel.

Departing for Jeddah

The train departed right on schedule, and I eagerly anticipated enjoying Saudi Arabia’s desert scenery. However, the sand dunes with camels and Bedouins that I had imagined were nowhere to be seen. Instead, the view consisted of barren rocky terrain under development. With little variation in the landscape, the scenery was somewhat disappointing compared to my expectations.

A minimalist dining car. It’s designed for takeout style rather than dining in.
During the journey, feeling a bit bored, I decided to visit the dining car. The “dining car” is actually just a counter selling snacks and drinks rather than a full restaurant car. Prices were somewhat high, and the menu was limited. I tried to order black coffee but was told they only had café au lait. I reluctantly ordered the café au lait, though I did appreciate having a warm beverage in the highly air-conditioned train.

Arriving at Jeddah Airport Station. Note that express trains bypass this station.
After approximately 2.5 hours of travel, we arrived at Jeddah Airport Station right on schedule. Many taxis were waiting in front of the station, allowing me to smoothly continue to my next destination.
Summary
My experience riding the Haramain High Speed Railway was an interesting mix of fulfilled expectations in terms of comfort and some unexpected discoveries. The onboard facilities and ride quality were excellent, and the punctual operation was reliable. On the other hand, those expecting desert scenery might find the views from the window somewhat lacking.
Nevertheless, it’s a valuable experience that offers a glimpse into the fusion of modernization and tradition in Saudi Arabia. The value for money is also good. As a means of intercity transportation, the Haramain High Speed Railway is definitely an attractive option. When you next visit Saudi Arabia, I highly recommend considering travel on the HHR Train.
