Introducing a hotel in the Muttrah district with convenient access to Muscat Old Town
When visiting Muscat, the capital of Oman, many tourists head to the Muttrah district, which retains much of its old Arabian atmosphere. Located in the heart of Muttrah, Marina Hotel is operated as part of the OYO hotel chain and has gained attention for its excellent location and surprisingly affordable prices. I recently stayed here and experienced its advantages and disadvantages firsthand. I’d like to share my honest impressions with travelers who want to enjoy Muttrah on an extremely tight budget.
Location: Ideal for Sightseeing in the Heart of Muttrah

Marina Hotel overlooking Muttrah harbor
The greatest attraction of Marina Hotel is its excellent location. Right in front of the hotel spreads one of Muttrah’s signature harbor viewpoints. Waking up early and enjoying the view of Muttrah Bay glittering with the sunrise was an exceptional experience.

Muscat’s major tourist attraction, Muttrah Souq, is just a few minutes’ walk away
The hotel is also ideally positioned just a few minutes’ walk from the famous Muttrah Souq. I was able to visit this attractive market with its shops selling spices, traditional crafts, and antiques multiple times with ease.
Additionally, the fish market with its fresh seafood is located right near the hotel. Being able to walk through the market alongside locals and glimpse everyday life in Oman is another unique charm of staying at this hotel.

Price: Unbelievable Value
One of Marina Hotel’s biggest attractions is its astonishingly low price. When I stayed, the rate was only about $35 USD per night. This is surprisingly cheap even compared to other hotels in the Muttrah district and by general hotel price standards.
Being able to stay in this prime location in the heart of Muttrah at such a price truly deserves the term “budget bargain.” This is an option that budget travelers shouldn’t miss.
My accommodation plan did not include breakfast, but considering the price, this was perfectly acceptable. There are many affordable dining options nearby, so it’s actually an opportunity to enjoy local flavors outside the hotel.

One of Oman’s most popular restaurants, Bait Al Luban, is just a one-minute walk from the hotel

There’s also a coffee shop popular with locals right next to the hotel. You can enjoy Arabic coffee while munching on Chips Oman
Cleanliness: Better Than Expected

High-quality room that doesn’t feel like a $35 accommodation. The room offers a harbor view
Having chosen a budget-friendly hotel, I was concerned about cleanliness, but those worries proved unfounded. The rooms were kept clean, and the towels and linens were fresh. The bathroom was sufficiently clean and comfortable to use.
The hotel staff appeared to be performing daily cleaning diligently, and the overall impression, including public areas, was one of cleanliness.
Facilities: Basic Necessities Available, But Some Issues
The rooms were equipped with the bare essentials. Air conditioning, television, small refrigerator, and electric kettle were provided, which is sufficient for a short stay.
However, some of the facilities showed signs of aging. Particularly, the air conditioning system was old and made a loud noise when operating. If used at night, the noise might disturb your sleep.
While Wi-Fi is available for free, the connection stability was somewhat problematic, occasionally becoming slow. This might be a concern if you need to use it for work.

The Biggest Drawback: Poor Soundproofing
The most significant problem with Marina Hotel is undoubtedly its poor soundproofing. Either the walls are thin, or the sounds from adjacent rooms and the hallway were surprisingly audible.
Furthermore, there’s a club in the basement of the hotel, and bass sounds resonated until late at night. While this might be a bonus point for music lovers, it was a major concern for travelers like me who prefer a quiet environment for sleeping.
The music and vibrations continuing past midnight significantly affected sleep quality. I had brought earplugs, but even those couldn’t completely block out the sound.
Overall Assessment: Recommended for Travelers Who Can Make the Most of the Ultra-Low Price
Marina Hotel excels in terms of location, price, and cleanliness. Particularly, the bargain price of around $35 USD will be a major attraction for travelers wanting to minimize their budget. This hotel is an ideal choice for those who want to fully enjoy Muttrah’s charm while keeping costs as low as possible.
However, it might be a bit challenging for those sensitive to noise or who want to sleep in a quiet environment. If you’re tolerant of some noise and vibration, or if you plan to stay out late, you’ll be able to maximize the benefits of this hotel.
Personally, I’m thinking of definitely bringing earplugs and noise-canceling headphones on my next visit to Muttrah. With those, I’m confident I can fully enjoy this hotel’s wonderful location and bargain price.
