Pristine white sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, and overwater bungalows. When you think of the Maldives, isn’t that exactly the kind of heavenly scenery that comes to mind? However, Maldives travel is generally considered expensive, and resort reservations are typically required.
In recent years, “Local Islands” have been challenging this conventional wisdom. However, unlike other countries, even when traveling to these local islands in the Maldives, you cannot travel smoothly without making advance reservations for hotels and transportation.
In this article, I’ll introduce recommended local islands for backpackers who want to travel without a fixed plan in the Maldives while still valuing those spontaneous, once-in-a-lifetime encounters.
Background: Local Islands Challenging Conventional Maldives Travel
The Maldives is a country consisting of more than 1,000 islands of various sizes, with most tourist destinations being resort islands. The typical format is one resort per island, and accommodation options are limited. Additionally, with limited transportation between islands, it was difficult to travel without booking accommodations in advance. However, in 2009, the government changed its policy and allowed tourists to stay on “Local Islands”. These islands began to attract attention as guesthouses and hotels were built, making it relatively easier to stay freely.
Nevertheless, tourism development is still limited on many local islands, with some having only one guesthouse on the entire island. Some islands have infrequent public ferry services, which can make travel time-consuming. “Speedboats,” a common mode of transportation, generally require booking through hotels or guesthouses. Therefore, the backpacker style of travel—deciding which island to visit on the day and figuring out where to stay—is extremely difficult in the Maldives.
Target Larger Islands for Peace of Mind Without Reservations!
For backpackers who dislike being constrained by schedules, while sudden visits to smaller local islands carry risks, you can visit and stay on larger islands with frequent public ferries and numerous hotels without making reservations.
Let me introduce three local islands among the larger ones that are especially recommended for backpackers.
1. Maafushi
Maafushi is an island in South Malé Atoll with a population of about 2,500. The island has a variety of guesthouses, hotels, restaurants, and shops, making it a relatively comfortable environment. You can also enjoy activities such as diving and snorkeling.
Attractions of Maafushi
Well-equipped facilities: Accommodation options ranging from guesthouses to luxury hotels to match your budget
Vibrant atmosphere: With markets and restaurants lined up, exploring the island is enjoyable
Treasure trove of activities: A wealth of marine activities including diving, snorkeling, and surfing
2. Villingili
Villingili is an island in North Malé Atoll with a population of about 4,000. It has flourished as part of the Malé metropolitan area and is known for its easy access with frequent ferry operations from Malé. It has more accommodation facilities, restaurants, and shops. The beaches are wide, allowing for a relaxed stay. The downside is that, due to its proximity to Malé, you can see high-rise buildings across the beach, and you won’t experience the feeling of being on a remote island. It’s a good island to visit if you have limited time or are concerned about transportation.
Attractions of Villingili
Relaxed time: Recommended for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle with minimal travel time
Beautiful beaches: Spectacular beaches with white sand and turquoise blue waters
Abundant marine sports: Activities that can be easily enjoyed, such as snorkeling and kayaking
3. Himmafushi
Himmafushi is an island in North Malé Atoll with a population of about 5,000. It’s relatively large among local islands and has a vibrant atmosphere. The east coast, in particular, is known as a surfer’s paradise and is bustling with tourists enjoying marine sports. There are also markets and mosques on the island, allowing you to experience a local atmosphere.
Attractions of Himmafushi
Vibrant atmosphere: A local atmosphere where you can enjoy interactions with islanders
Well-stocked market: A lively market lined with fresh seafood, vegetables, and fruits
Mosque visits: Opportunity to experience Islamic culture through mosque visits
Summary: Local Islands Opening a New Door to Maldives Travel
Traditional Maldives travel has been preceded by an expensive image, but by choosing local islands, you can enjoy it relatively affordably. Especially on larger islands, there are many public ferry services, making transportation easy. For backpackers who value spontaneous encounters, relatively developed local islands such as Maafushi, Villingili, and Himmafushi are recommended. Please consider planning your own unique Maldives journey.
